Legacy Salon in Clearfield, IA
Welcome back! We are in week 2 of our Home Area business features. If you are just joining us, I will do a quick rundown for you. I am visiting and photographing family owned businesses in our area of Southwest Iowa. I want to bring attention to all the wonderful opportunities of goods and services that we have around here. “Promote regionally to grow locally” is a nice little quote I borrowed for this project.
Let’s head over to Clearfield today!
Angie was another one of my first contacts for this project…waaaayyyy back in December. This change in weather has me feeling like it was so much longer than that! She was right on board so away we go…
It’s All In The Name
Angie Miller owns Legacy Salon in Clearfield, Iowa. If you all don’t know my family personally, she is also my sister in-law. Angie has 18 years of experience of owning her own Salon. She took over her mom, Jeanie Larson’s Salon and at the time it was named “Hair It Is”.
Even though Angie has had her license for 18 years she had cosmetology in her blood starting at a very young age. Growing up, her mom had a salon in their home. Now, wouldn’t that be an awesome plus as a teenage girl. Am I right, ladies? Not only does Angie and her mom have their license, but there are also 4 others in the family with their licenses as well. Talk about in their blood!
“I started learning the hair business by working on my friend’s hair and all of my Barbie’s had short hair. I must have had a thing for facial hair as I remember shaving off my eyebrows. Thank God they grew back!”
Angie started with a shop uptown in Clearfield and was there for 6 years. In 2008 she built her shop at her home on the edge of Clearfield and she feels it was a wonderful decision! She wanted it at her house to make life easier raising her 3 children, Zach, Morgan and Brooke. It was at this time that she renamed her Salon to “Legacy Salon”.
“I chose the name “Legacy” as a tribute to my mom. Having taken over the business from her and years of me learning from her. I also named it Legacy for the many years of stories from the people that have visited my home over the years.”
When I arrived at her salon last week, she was just finishing up with a client. Candace graciously agreed to let me photgraph her and her New Do. I always love looking at the after shots that hairdressers put up on their social media. So I knew I needed to capture a few of Angie at work and the final look!
Love it Candace, you look beautiful!
Angie takes great care to make her Salon comfortable with a homey feel. She said the atmosphere at the salon is all about making her clients feel peaceful and relaxed. I think some people just go to the salon to visit, even when they aren’t getting their hair done. I mean look at this coffee bar set up. And we established last time that I love my coffee! Ok it’s me, I am the one that goes in for coffee without an appointment! BUT, I know there are others as well!
Speaking of guests without an appointment. Sometimes she will have some feathered friends that visit from across the street. Chickens. Yes, I said chickens. Not IN the salon of course, but they might be outside to great you and then scuttle off in search of goodies in the grass. Don’t worry they are friendly! ;)
Services: Above and Beyond
Angie welcomes any and all to her shop. She especially enjoys being able to accommodate the very young and the not so very young. Check out the pictures of the toys and books just for the kids. She said it’s a big hit with the kids that come in with their parents! She also does all she can to help out her older clients. She will travel locally to homes of clients that can’t get out to her.
“I am open to scheduling appointments to travel to a client’s home if they are housebound and unable to come to me. I also travel to local nursing homes when a client wishes to have me come to them.”
Angie believes that trust is the most important thing and she works at building that with each client. She gives each client her full one-on-one attention the minute they walk through her door. She also feels an important part of her job is education. She has a goal of learning what each client wants to achieve with their visit and then finding out what he/she feels like they cannot do when they get back home. She builds a plan to help teach each one how to work with their hair at home and then recommend a home care plan.
Angie’s services include along with haircuts:
- Perms
- Color
- Special occasion hair
- Mani-Pedi
- Facials
- Reflexology
- Waxing
- Wig care
She had a room dedicated for facials and reflexology! I asked her to explain reflexology a bit for those who had never heard of it.
“Reflexology helps rid the body of toxins which in turn help to relieve pain. I work on pressure points in the hands and feet. These pressure points are nerve endings and if congested can feel painful. I have seen great results after repeated treatments. Relief of sinus pressure, headaches, blood circulations lowered anxiety and so much more. Reflexology is not a cure but can help find some relief. “
Weddings and Prom
Angie said she also has a lot of fun with wedding and prom hair. They are both very exciting days for all involved and she loves to be in on that! She mentioned how much she loves to see that glow as they look in the mirror. She wanted to make sure to add that she is open for prom 2020 so give her a call to set up an appointment!
A Collector at Heart
It is evident when you walk in, that Angie has a love for antiquing, decorating, crafting and painting. Her clients are surprised each time they come in at what may be changed and added. She has a wonderful display in her mani-pedi nook. There is a beautiful collection of hats both new and very old. She found some on her trips to antique stores and some were donated to her for display from her clients. Among the display is a wedding dress that was worn years ago by a lovely clients mother! I was surprised at how good of condition it is. I love it, so classy!
Cosmetology services are very common in each town around us. It is a wonderful service to have in our little area here in southwest Iowa! I think we all love to be pampered :) Angie had one more thing to add for anyone new to know.
"There are so many wonderful salons in our surrounding towns with talented cosmetologists that offer their own unique servies. Only you can determine which one is right for you. I am always welcoming new clients to come try me out!"
Angie does not post regular hours as each day is different. She works with her client's schedules. She mainly takes appointments from Tuesday through Saturday, but it's not unusual to see her working on a Sunday if the need arises. For this reason she likes to advertise both her salon and cell number. She is available at all hours for you to contact her by calling, texting or FB messenging.

Carol Cason - Angie is the greatest! She always knows just the right thing to do with my hair! She's so awesome at what she does, just like her mom was when I went to her!
